Knob-billed Duck

The Knob-billed Duck, also known as Comb Duck is a local resident in Gujarat though may have seasonal movements in relation to water availability. It is very easy to identify because of the large, fleshy, dark grey growth or “comb” on the top of the male’s black beak. This is an unusual and distinctive feature of the duck which enlarges during the breeding season. Some taxonomists further classify this species in to two: Knob-billed Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos melanotos) and Comb Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos sylvicola).
