Short-eared Owl is a medium-sized owl with a round head. The “ears” are a bit difficult to see as they are usually held down and that’s how they derive the name. Interestingly, this species prefers to be active during the daytime unlike other owls – especially active around dawn and dusk, when it flies lazily over open fields or marshes in search of small mammals. The Short-eared Owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia and has one of the most widespread distributions in comparison to any other bird.
