The Greater Sand Plover, also known as Large Sand Dotterel, is a small wader in the plover family of birds. The two sand plovers, i.e. Lesser and Greater are very difficult birds to identify correctly. In all plumages, it is very similar to Lesser Sand Plover except the shape and length of the bill, shape of wingbar and uppertail pattern. Greater Sand Plovers were named after Jean Baptiste Leschenault de la Tour, a French collector and botanist.
