Grey-headed Swamphen

Grey-headed Swamphen was earlier popularly known as Purple Moorhen or Purple Swamphen in India but there has been a taxonomy change in 2015. It was considered a subspecies of the Purple Swamphen, but was elevated to full species status in 2015. Grey-headed Swamphen is a very shy bird and hides itself among the vegetation and reeds at the slightest disturbance. Historical data hints that the Romans kept these birds as decorative birds at large villas and expensive houses. They were regarded as noble birds and were among the few birds that Romans did not eat.
