The Common Snipe is a stocky and medium-sized wading bird. It is a well camouflaged bird, usually shy and conceals itself close to ground vegetation and flushes only when approached closely. They fly off in a series of aerial zig-zags to confuse predators. During flight displays, they circle high and suddenly dive with outspread outer tail feathers, producing a characteristic low and pulsating whistle.
