Great Thick-knee or the Great Stone-plover or the Great Stone-curlew is a wader bird and despite being classed as a wader, this species prefers dry open habitats with some bare ground. It is mostly found at gravel banks along rivers or large lakes and also at beaches. In India it is found in large numbers in Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and the Himalayan foothills. The bird is mostly nocturnal but can also be seen foraging during the day. Thick-knees are so named because of their prominent thick joints on their long yellow or greenish legs.
